A new study shows that some types of dairy products, such as calcium-enriched milk and dairy products containing soy are linked with an increased risk of heart disease. (1)
Dr. Michael S. A. Lehnert, associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, said he wasn’t surprised when the study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. In the study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, heart disease was associated with a 44 percent increased risk of being hospitalized for congestive heart failure.
“We found that some types of dairy products, like calcium-enriched milk and dairy products containing soy, have an increased risk of heart disease, but that is because some of these foods also have higher levels of calcium than are healthy foods,” said Lehnert, the author of the study.
According to Lehnert, many of the products he studied included milk, cheese and ice cream, and a variety of other dairy-based products. He said the findings are consistent with recent reports from other studies and support the use of lactose-free dairy products for calcium-enriched milk and dairy products containing soy.
“These findings are not new. However, these findings need to be carefully interpreted,” said Lehnert, who is also a professor of medicine at the University of Washington.
According to Lehnert, the study was designed to measure the effects of the various dairy-based and non-dairy-based products and found that a small group of people had an increased risk of heart disease compared to healthy people.
“We saw that there was a large group of people who were hospitalized for heart failure, which is a really important finding to understand because there are so many types of products that are safe and are safe, and they are also so many types of products, and they are so many types of products that are not healthy,” said Lehnert. “And as we look at the overall health and life outcomes of people with heart disease, that’s a really important finding to help us make the most of this research.”
About 40,000 people in the United States have a heart disease diagnosis. About 8 percent of people who have a heart disease diagnosis are diagnosed with chronic heart failure, and about half of those have a chronic condition.
Researchers at the University of Chicago used data from a nationwide survey of 8,000 people with chronic heart failure to see if a group of people with heart disease had an increased risk of heart disease, with or without a diagnosis of heart failure.
The researchers found that in people with heart disease who were prescribed the most commonly used heart medication and had the most frequent heart tests, those with a diagnosis of heart failure had a 25 percent increased risk of having an increased heart failure risk.
“The fact that a group of people with heart disease is more likely to have heart failure than a group without it means that there is a more serious problem,” said Lehnert. “That means that people with heart disease are more likely to have a heart failure diagnosis, and that means that people with heart disease are more likely to have chronic heart failure.”
Other findings show that people with heart disease were more likely to have a heart-related condition, such as chest pain, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. In people without a diagnosis of heart disease, the researchers found that people with heart disease were also more likely to have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
“When we look at the general health outcomes that we see from people who are diagnosed with heart failure, and those who have heart failure, we see that people with heart disease have higher health outcomes,” said Lehnert. “So if you look at the general health outcomes of people with heart disease, you will see that people who are diagnosed with heart failure have higher health outcomes than those who are diagnosed with heart disease and their heart disease was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease.”
The study was conducted by the University of Chicago’s College of Medicine and the University of Washington’s Department of Medicine. Researchers used the data to test for associations between heart disease, kidney disease, blood pressure, and heart disease.
“It is a relatively new finding and there are no previous studies that have examined this relationship. And as we’ve said for a long time, there is no one study that has looked at this relationship.” said Lehnert.
The study was led by a team of cardiologists and the University of Washington’s Pulmonary Hypertension Division.
